Medan is a large city in North Sumatra:


It's population in the city: 2,046,973


It's population in the Metro area: 4,103,696


And yet we were stopped on the street, especially Kelly, multiple times because as Caucasians from America we were an incredible rarity.  This is Kelly being stopped in a museum.



This may reflect my naivety or my arrogance or both, but I never thought I could go to any city of this size anywhere in the world and not see another Caucasian American for 2 days. 


We had eyes on us all the time.  And as we walked around (NOTE: NEVER TAKE SIDEWALKS FOR GRANTED) I felt like an Alien and in a way, I was. Everyone was very nice and most wanted to practice their English with us as I struggled to speak Bahasa Indonesian with them. 


People pointed at us and giggled.  Others just gave a long stare in suspended disbelief.


I have never felt like this before.  It was surreal.  


And I had my first experience as a passenger in a "tuk-tuk" ...
