SAMPAI JUMPA BALI! SEE YOU LATER
SELAMAT MALAM SUMATRA! GOOD EVENING
If you had told me 9 months ago I would be on a domestic flight within Indonesia to go work on island conservation, I would have told you to go back to Shutter Island.
Alas, here we are sitting in the terminal of Garuda Airlines (I have never heard of them either.)
There are prayer rooms all over this small domestic terminal, which is different.
We are flying to Medan, a city on the east coast of Northern Sumatra and the jumping off point to most adventures in this province of Indonesia. Tomorrow we will fly to Simeulue, a small island off the west coast to begin our work. The planes are small and there is nothing more I enjoy than flying on small planes, on airlines I have never heard of, and attempting to touch down on island landing strips. If Tom Hanks could survive a water landing, why can't I?
