This is a Powerful negative image when seen through the lens of most people I know.  So you can imagine it has been somewhat disconcerting to see quite a few of these swastikas around Bali, mostly on the entrance to villages and temples.

I knew the Third Reich did not invade Nusa Penida, so instead of using the laws of my universe judging the Balinese to somehow be Nazi sympathizers, I Tried to press pause on judgment.

I asked a few questions and learned something.

"Swastika" comes from Sanskrit. When broken down phonetically, "su" means "good," "asti" means "to be," and "ka" is the suffix.

Swastika literally means "to be good".

Some other native of Bali said it means  "to be with the higher self".

The symbols we sense each day have completely different meanings to completely different people. Acceptance of this makes life easier for me each day.
